Its the festive season here in India.
In India, we love Diwali at home and its the time of the year when the whole family is at one place, celebrating and enjoying.
Follow the traditional style of paper lanterns this Diwali for that delicate, yet beautiful decoration.
Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate and decorate their homes.
When I was a kid, I used to see my father making the traditional aakash kandil/ lantern for diwali.
Making a traditional aakash kandil takes time, patience and efforts.
I used to see my father making just one aakash kandil with lots of love, patience.
That time only I had decided one day I will make it, and this is the year when finaly I decided to give it a try.
Today I will show you How to Make a Paper Lantern For Diwali: Indian Akash Kandil 🙂
Guys please make this as one of your weekend diy projects as it takes time to make.
But your efforts are so worth it to see the ultimate result.
Make Diwali Paper Lanterns or Aaakash Kandil At Home is so much fun.
I have already started with my Diwali preparation by making this DIY diya.
And now I am so ready to make this traditional Indian Aakash kandil/ lantern.
What you need it:
Material You Need:
Sheets of Tissue Papers ( as per your choice)
:- 4 long
:- 24 Short
Glue/ Gum gun
4 Ribbons to make bows
AND lots of Patience.
With a smile on your face :), guys lets get started.
First make a structure like below.
Please note I have not specificly given the measurements here.
My latern size is 3 feet. If you wish to make a 2 feet long lantern the measurement will be different.
I will help you to understand the lantern making process.
Please use measurement as per your judgement.
To keep wooden sticks together use thread. You need to keep wrapping thread around the sticks till the time they stick together.
I am not using any glue to stick them.
The structure should be straight as it will affect the shape of your lantern.
Now take two small sticks. Keep some distance between them and start wrapping thread tightly to stick them together.
It will look something like below.
Make total 8 pieces like this.
Now comes the tricky part.
Since it was my first time to make, I took my father in law’s help to understand this tricky part.
Well dont be scared. I am here to help you.
What you all need to do is take one peice from 8 pices which you craeted above.
Gently (without breaking the bond) stretch it in such a way that both of its ends will reach the right and left points of one side of the structure.
Again using thread gently and tightly stick both the ends to the main structure like below.
Repeat the same process for the bottom part of the structure like below.
Now its time to stick together all 4 points in the middle. Again use the thread to keep them together.
Remember to cross check the tightness of the thread so that the bond will not be broken later.
Once you repeat the process for rest of three sides. The final wooden structure will look like a hexagon.
I have taken pictures of this structure from different angles to give you more idea.
Now its time to move your attention to the decoration part.
The wooden structure has:
- 4 Squares
- 8 Triangles
- 8 Retangles
I have decided to use white paper to cover the square and blue color to cover the triangles.
You can choose any type of color combination as per your choice.
The reason behind using white and blue color combination is because its a Aakash kandil.
In India aakash means sky so its white and blue 🙂
You will need to cut some triangle and square shaped papers.
Take the measurement of wooden sturcture’s square, rectangle and triangle and cut the papers accordingly.
You will need 4 Squares , 8 Triangles and 8 Retangles.
Keep some extra space. For example if the sqaure size is 4 X 4 inch cut paper of size 5.5 X 5.5 inch OR 5 X 5 inch.
Dont cute all 4 shapes together. First cut once piece of square and make sure is of proper size and then cute the rest of squares.
Start placing paper on the structure. Use gum/ glue gun to stick it.
Like I said the extra size of square, triangle and rectangle will help you to give the lantern proper shape.
Once you stick the paper, gently and very carefully cut out the excess part.
This is how to take measurement and cut papers.
Use the golden paper and cute some thin paper plates.
Use these golden plates to decorate the edges.
With ribbons make 4 bows.
Place each of the bows on four sides of the lantern.
Now its time to give some finishing to our lantern.
I cut many 2 X 2 inch squares of same white and blue papers.
Take once square and stick left upper side to right lower side.
It will look somthing like below.
Convert all squares.
We need to use these pieces to decorate the rectangle sides of the lantern. Like below.
Using 1 X 1 cm golden squares I added extra touch to rectangle sides of the lantern.
Take white tissue paper sheet. Now you must be having measurement of the square of wooden structure.
Say if it 4 X 4 inch. Take 5 inch width and 10 inch height white tissue paper sheet.
Cute the sheet like below. Note I have not cut it fully. If you can observe I have kept almost 2 inch distance from the top.
Make total 4 pieces like this
Place your lantern up side down on the table.
On one side of the square apply glue and stick one white sheet of it from inside.
Do it for rest of the three sides.
And TADA your handmade traditional Indian Diwali Aakash Kandil / Lantern is ready.
Hang it like below with help of thread and put some LED light in it.
On Diwali first day I am so ready in traditional Indian saree next to my DIY Diwali lantern.
And this is how it looks in the night.
I just dont wish to move away from it. It looks so stunning.
